Château de Noirieux

The Property

Château de Noirieux is a four-star manor hotel tucked away in the village of Briollay, about 15 kilometers north of Angers in the Loire Valley. The estate comprises several historic buildings dating from the 15th to 17th centuries — a castle, a manor house, a chapel, and an orangery — all set within a lush, tree-filled park along the banks of the Loir river (that’s the Loir, not the Loire — the smaller tributary that feeds into the big one).

The atmosphere here is peaceful verging on soporific, in the best possible way. This isn’t a place for people who need constant entertainment. It’s where you come to read a book by the pool, take long walks through the grounds, and let the discreet staff bring you things without having to ask twice.

The Wine Connection

The château sits in the Anjou wine region, one of the most versatile and underrated corners of the Loire Valley wine country. Anjou produces everything from bone-dry Savennières (arguably France’s greatest Chenin Blanc) to the lusciously sweet Coteaux du Layon, plus an increasing number of excellent reds from Cabernet Franc.

You’re within easy reach of Savennières, Quarts de Chaume, and Bonnezeaux — appellations that wine insiders get genuinely excited about. Saumur and Saumur-Champigny are less than an hour south. The advantage of basing yourself here rather than further east in Touraine is that western Loire wines are generally less touristy and more rewarding for those willing to explore.

What to Expect

The hotel offers rooms split between the castle and the manor, with categories ranging from Classic to Prestige. Décor leans traditional French country house — think antique furniture, garden views, and the kind of tasteful restraint that suggests old money rather than new renovation. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, which is a genuine plus during Loire summers, and the grounds are extensive enough for proper walks.

The on-site restaurant, L’Attilio, is run by chef Attilio Marrazzo, who draws on the estate’s own vegetable garden for a cuisine that blends French technique with Italian sensibility. It’s open for lunch, dinner, tea time, and aperitifs on the terrace and veranda.

Caveats: the property is accessible only by car — there’s no meaningful public transport to Briollay. And while the peaceful setting is the whole point, travelers who want walkable restaurants or evening entertainment will find it too quiet. The rooms in the castle are reached only by stairs, so accessibility is limited.

Practical Details

Room rates start from around €150-250 per night for a Classic room, rising to €300-400+ for the Prestige categories. For this part of the Loire, that represents reasonable value given the setting and quality.

The hotel is at 26 Route du Moulin, 49125 Briollay. Phone: +33 2 41 42 50 05. Angers is the nearest city (15 minutes by car), with TGV connections to Paris in about 90 minutes. A car is essential.

Best combined with a broader Loire Valley wine tour — you could use Noirieux as a base for exploring Anjou’s vineyards for two or three nights, then move east to Touraine for Vouvray and Chinon.
