Château de Noizay

The Property

Château de Noizay is a 16th-century castle hotel perched above the Loire Valley in the village of Noizay, roughly halfway between Amboise and Vouvray in the Touraine region. The building dates to 1514, when it was constructed by Georges de Vercle on the ruins of a feudal castle known since the 12th century. It played a role in the French Wars of Religion — it was a Protestant stronghold during the Amboise Conspiracy of 1560, which gives the place a bit more historical weight than your average château hotel.

Today it operates as a five-star hotel with 17 rooms, set within a 24-hectare park. The vibe is classic French country château — history on the walls, nature outside, and a pace of life that encourages doing very little, very well.

The Wine Connection

The location is superb for wine. Noizay sits just minutes from Vouvray, one of the Loire’s most celebrated appellations and home to some of the finest Chenin Blanc in the world — still, sparkling, dry, and sweet. The limestone caves where Vouvray producers age their wines are fascinating to visit and very different from the barrel-room experience you get in Bordeaux or Burgundy.

You’re also within easy reach of Montlouis-sur-Loire (Vouvray’s up-and-coming neighbor across the river), Chinon and Bourgueil for Cabernet Franc reds, and Amboise for the full Renaissance château experience. This stretch of the Loire Valley packs more wine diversity into a small area than almost anywhere else in France.

What to Expect

The 17 rooms are spread between the château itself and the Clock Pavilion, with categories running from Classic through Deluxe, Prestige, and Family. Ground-floor Pavilion rooms open onto small private gardens — a nice touch. Décor is traditional without being overwrought: period furniture, quality fabrics, and enough antiques to remind you where you are without making you afraid to sit down.

The restaurant offers seasonal cuisine built around local products — fresh vegetables, regional meats and fish, artisanal cheeses. It’s not chasing Michelin stars, which is actually refreshing. The cooking is solid, honest, and well-matched to the wines of Touraine. There’s also a heated outdoor pool and a tennis court, plus the 24-hectare park for walks.

A word of caution: some of the rooms — particularly the Classic category — can feel compact by five-star standards. And like most Loire château hotels, you’re in rural France, which means limited options if you want to eat somewhere other than the hotel restaurant. The seasonal opening (typically March through November) also means you can’t visit in winter.

Practical Details

Room rates vary by season, but expect roughly €200-350 for a Classic or Deluxe room, and €400+ for Prestige rooms and Family suites. For a five-star château in prime Loire country, this is competitive pricing.

The château is at 124 Promenade de Waulsort, 37210 Noizay. Phone: +33 (0)2 32 40 43 43. Tours is about 20 minutes by car; Amboise is 10 minutes. The TGV station at Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (Tours) connects to Paris in about an hour, but you’ll want a car for wine-touring.

This pairs perfectly with a Loire Valley wine tour focused on Touraine — two or three nights here gives you time to visit Vouvray, Montlouis, Chinon, and a couple of the famous Renaissance châteaux (Amboise and Chenonceau are both close).
