Vendée Wine Tours

The Vendée, on France’s Atlantic coast south of the main Loire Valley, is home to the Fiefs Vendéens AOC — one of France’s newer appellations, having gained full AOC status in 2011. It’s a small, under-the-radar wine region that rewards curious visitors with genuine character and outstanding value.

Five communes make up the appellation: Mareuil, Brem, Vix, Pissotte, and Chantonnay. Each has a distinct personality. Mareuil produces the most structured reds, primarily from Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir planted on chalky limestone. Brem, just inland from the coast at Les Sables-d’Olonne, makes mineral-driven whites from Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay that carry a distinctly saline, maritime character — some of the most interesting coastal whites in France.

The reds across the appellation tend toward a lighter, more aromatic style than you’d find further up the Loire — think bright fruit, fresh acidity, and moderate alcohol. They’re perfect warm-weather wines, and the locals drink them with the Vendée’s excellent seafood: oysters from the Baie de l’Aiguillon, sardines, and the region’s famous mogettes (white beans).

We think the Vendée is a wonderful addition to a broader Loire wine tour, especially for visitors who appreciate discovering regions before the rest of the world catches on. The winemakers here are passionate about proving their terroir deserves recognition, and the combination of coastal scenery, fresh seafood, and honest wines makes for a memorable day of touring.
