The Property
Hostellerie de Levernois is a five-star Relais & Châteaux hotel set within a seven-hectare park just five kilometers from the center of Beaune — the wine capital of Burgundy. The property is built around an 18th-century country house, with additions including a modern pavilion wing and private villas, all connected by manicured grounds, ancient trees, and the gently flowing Bouzaise river.
It’s the kind of place that manages to feel both luxurious and unpretentious — a tricky combination that most hotels get wrong in one direction or the other. The staff are warm without being obsequious, the grounds are beautiful without being manicured to within an inch of their lives, and the overall effect is of staying at a very well-run private estate rather than a hotel.
The Wine Connection
If you’ve come to France specifically for wine, Levernois is about as well-positioned as it gets. Beaune is the commercial heart of Burgundy wine country, and from here you can reach virtually every major appellation in the Côte d’Or within a short drive. The Côte de Beaune’s greatest vineyards — Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Pommard, Volnay — are all within 15 minutes. The Côte de Nuits (Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges) is about 30 minutes north.
Beaune itself is packed with wine merchants, tasting cellars, and the famous Hospices de Beaune. The hotel can arrange vineyard visits and tastings with producers throughout the region. Frankly, you could spend a week here and barely scratch the surface.
What to Expect
There are 23 rooms and suites spread across several buildings. The main house offers Charm and Character rooms with exposed stone, oak parquet, and rustic beams. The Pavilion wing has 13 more contemporary rooms, each with a private terrace opening onto the park — these are the best pick for a first visit, combining modern comfort with that park setting. For a splurge, the private villas offer complete seclusion.
Dining is a serious draw. The Table de Levernois holds a Michelin star, with a menu built on traditional Burgundian flavors and seasonal ingredients, many from the hotel’s own vegetable garden. For something more relaxed, the Bistrot du Bord de l’Eau offers casual gourmet cooking with daily-changing menus. There’s also a spa, which is a welcome addition after long days of vineyard walking and wine tasting.
The honest drawback: this level of quality in the heart of Burgundy comes at Burgundy prices. The Côte d’Or is not a cheap region to begin with, and Levernois is at the premium end. Also, while five kilometers from Beaune is close by car, it’s a bit far to walk comfortably, so you’re somewhat dependent on driving or taxis for evening outings in town.
Practical Details
Room rates start from around €250-350 for a Charm room, rising to €400-600+ for Prestige and Pavilion rooms, and considerably more for the villas. The Michelin-starred restaurant is priced accordingly — plan on €100-150+ per person for dinner with wine.
The hotel is at 15 Rue du Golf, 21200 Levernois. Phone: +33 3 80 24 73 58. Beaune’s TGV station has direct connections to Paris (about 2 hours) and Lyon (1.5 hours). A car is useful but not strictly necessary if you’re happy to arrange transfers and guided vineyard tours.
This is the obvious base for a Burgundy wine tour. Three to four nights gives you time to explore both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, visit Beaune’s historic center, and still have an afternoon free for the spa.
