Loire Wines

The Loire Valley produces the widest variety of wine styles of any region in France. From the Atlantic-influenced Muscadet at the river’s mouth to the continental-climate Sauvignon Blancs of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé near its headwaters, the Loire covers an extraordinary range of grapes, soils, and climates across more than 1,000 kilometres.

Chenin Blanc is the valley’s signature white grape, capable of producing everything from razor-sharp dry wines in Savennières to lusciously sweet Coteaux du Layon and sparkling Crémant de Loire. Cabernet Franc makes elegant, mineral-driven reds in Chinon, Bourgueil, and Saumur-Champigny. And Melon de Bourgogne, the grape behind Muscadet, has seen a remarkable quality revival in recent years with the sur lie wines of the Sèvre et Maine.

We think the Loire is one of France’s most rewarding wine regions for curious drinkers. The wines are excellent value, the producers are welcoming, and the combination of Renaissance châteaux, river scenery, and outstanding local food makes for a trip that goes well beyond the glass.
